Background:

Our Pioneer is Daniel A Morgan, Sr. Much of the information presented here is based on an article written by Ted Burns, Daniel’s obituary and research work done by Theresa Merkens Benson and Michele Morgan Richey. Daniel A Morgan Sr (1829-1905) was born in Draperstown, Ballynascreen, Londonderry, Ireland on January 17, 1829. His father and mother were Bernard and Roseanne McWillams Morgan. Daniel emigrated from Ireland and arrived in the United States in 1847 on the Manchester. Daniel worked for the railroad in Tennessee for a number of years before moving to what is now Seymour Township, near Shullsburg, WI. Daniel married Mary Gallagher (1836-1926) in 1856. With the money he had saved he purchased one hundred sixty acres of farm land in Seymour Township on the 1st day of May,1861. The deed was signed by Abraham Lincoln. The family story is that he purchased 640 acres in all. Daniel and Mary had the following children all born in the Seymour township area: Rose Ann 1856-1929 Bernard Francis 1858-1922 Henry 1860-1908 Daniel Jr 1862-1904 Francis 1865-1963 Mary Matilde (Tille)1867-1909 Peter 1870-1950 Catherine (Jenny)1873-1916 Baby Joseph Patrick 1875-1875 Elizabeth 1877-1914 Joseph Patrick 1878-1918 Daniel and Mary are buried in New St. Matthews Cemetery north of Shullsburg.
