Henry Stephens was born May 12, 1807 in Cornwall England. In 1832 he came to Canada and Mineral Point in 1836. In 1840 he came to Shullsburg as a Carpenter, a trade he leaned in England. Since coming to Shullsburg , however, he has always been engaged in mining. He owned 14 acres in Shullsburg with his residence located on South Judgment Street. His home in 1881 cost $6000 to build. He had business property in town and farming lands as well. He was a member of The Village Board for 6 years. Henry married Blanch Leah of Cornwall England in 1832 and they had 4 children, two living: Ellen now Mrs. Richert and Mary H. now Mrs. Hoover. The years between 1830 and 1840 were noted for the great influx of settlers into the future town of Shullsburg. Among the number were John K. Williams, Zebediah Gates, the McNulty family, Solomon, William, and Edwin Osborne, Alexander Mock, Thomas, Hoskins, J.H. Knowlton, John Ryan, the Meloy family, James McFerrin, W. H. Howard, A.A. Overton, W.P. Boyce, Charles and Harry Brockway, John Cottle, John Hill, Joseph Pulis, DennisTynan, Charles Pole, Andrew, John and David Roberts, John Hardy Col. Scales, the Ladd Family, Mr. Quinch, Mr. Copeland, Mr. Stephens, Mr. McQuadey, S. Recor, and many others who have crossed the river of death or departed for unknown climes.
